Version history and references

The CDIO standards were initially introduced in 2005 (Brodeur & Crawley, 2005) and presented more extensively by Crawley et al. (2007). Since then, the standards have been updated twice: CDIO standards 2.0 were adapted in 2014 (Crawley et al., 2014) and the rubrics were further modified (Bennedsen et al., 2016), resulting in CDIO standards 2.1. These modifications were all relatively minor and did not change the scope or the main contents of the standards.

The CDIO Standards 3.0 were adopted by the CDIO Council on the 10th of June 2020. The modifications from version 2.1 to 3.0 can be considered major, and were made to address aspects related to sustainability, digitalization, services and faculty competences (Malmqvist, Edström & Rosén, 2020). This document contains the full definitions of the CDIO Standards 3.0, including descriptions, rationale and rubrics.

Furthermore, the CDIO Standards 3.0 are complemented by “optional” CDIO standards that codify additional educational best practices that have been developed within the CDIO community (Malmqvist, Edström & Hugo, 2017). Four optional CDIO Standards have been fully developed, to address 1) Sustainable development, 2) Simulation-based mathematics, 3) Engineering entrepreneurship, and 4) Internationalisation & mobility (Malmqvist et al., 2020).
